LESBIAN LAND

These pictures are an expression of my love affair with the Lesbian Land movement.

Also known as Women's Land, these intentional communities were formed on the West coast of the United States,

in the 1970's and early 80's.

I co-founded and lived on Womanshare for 5 years, from 1974-1979, and continued to return. Living on the land and amongst other women was a formative experience of self discovery, creativity, and what I can only name as spiritual coming out into the wholeness of who I am.

This is my record of images reflecting our efforts at creating Lesbian Culture on Lesbian Land, which existed across and between our cabins, each other, and the natural world.

In 2023, Womanshare chose to gift this land back to Indigenous Black and Brown Women and Queer/Two Spirit people. What began as a radical project to hold safe haven for lesbian women in the woods has evolved into a matriarchal space for community healing, land healing, and culture. This land now lives on as NATIVEWOMANSHARE.
